MELT PARTITION COEFFICIENTS FOR Re , Ru , Pd , Au

چکیده
Introduction Experimental studies have identified spinels as important hosts phases for many of the highly siderophile elements (HSE) [1-4]. Yet experimental studies involving chromite or Cr-rich spinel have been lacking. Experimental studies of partitioning of HSEs between silicate, oxides and silicate melt are plagued by low solubilities and the presence of small metallic nuggets at oxygen fugacities relevant to magmas, which interfere with analysis of the phases of interest [5]. We have circumvented these problems in two ways: 1) performing experiments at oxidized conditions, which are still relevant to natural systems but in which nuggets are not observed, and 2) analysis of run products with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), allowing a combination of high sensitivity and good spatial resolution.

Partitioning of Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Ir, and Au between Cr-bearing spinel, olivine, pyroxene and silicate melts
A series of high temperature experiments was undertaken to study partitioning of several highly siderophile elements (HSE; Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Os, Ir, Pt and Au) between Cr-rich spinel, olivine, pyroxene and silicate melt. Runs were carried out on a Hawaiian ankaramite, a synthetic eucrite basalt, and a DiAn eutectic melt, at one bar, 19 kbar, and 20 kbar, respectively, in the temperature range of ...
متن کاملPartitioning of palladium at high pressures and temperatures during core formation
An early equilibration of the Earth’s mantle with the metals that later formed the core may explain the concentrations of ironloving (siderophile) elements in the mantle. However, a subset of these elements, the highly siderophile elements including palladium, are present in greater concentrations than expected. Moreover, their relative ratios are similar to those found in chondrites, that is, ...
متن کاملThe influence of carbon on trace element partitioning behavior
Carbon has been proposed as a potential light element in planetary cores, included in models of planetary core formation, and found in meteoritic samples and minerals. To better understand the effect of C on the partitioning behavior of elements, solid/liquid partition coefficients (D = (solid metal)/(liquid metal)) were determined for 17 elements (As, Au, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Ge, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Pt...
متن کاملThe iron–nickel–phosphorus system: Effects on the distribution of trace elements during the evolution of iron meteorites
To better understand the partitioning behavior of elements during the formation and evolution of iron meteorites, two sets of experiments were conducted at 1 atm in the Fe–Ni–P system. The first set examined the effect of P on solid metal/liquid metal partitioning behavior of 22 elements, while the other set explored the effect of the crystal structures of body-centered cubic (a)and face-center...
متن کاملHydrogenation of Lactic Acid to 1,2‐Propanediol over Ru‐Based Catalysts
The catalytic hydrogenation of lactic acid to 1,2-propanediol with supported Ru catalysts in water was investigated. The influence of catalyst support (activated carbon, γ-Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, and CeO2) and promoters (Pd, Au, Mo, Re, Sn) on the catalytic performance was evaluated. Catalytic tests revealed that TiO2 yields the best Ru catalysts. With a monometallic Ru/TiO2 catalyst, a 1,2-propaned...
